Before starting Automation Solutions in 1998, Kip Johnston was the Director of Engineering for a machine tool and wastewater treatment OEM, delivering equipment to major manufacturers that included American Airlines, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Leatherman Knives, Amphenol, among others. 

Since 1998, he has led Automation Solutions as we provide world-class control systems that have been qualified by, and continue to serve, companies as diverse as Apple, AGC Electronic Components, BAE Systems, Barclays Center, Boeing, Caterpillar, ConAgra, CRH Americas Material, Fujimi, Huntington Ingles, Intel, John Deere, Knife River, Lamb Weston, Linde Gas, Northrup Grumman, RJ Reynolds, SEH America, SpaceX, Starkist, Terex, and the US Army Corp of Engineers.

How does this work?

We can perform this survey remotely or onsite, as you prefer. 

After appropriate non-disclosure agreements are completed, we will ask for your documentation and photographs of your products. If you have chosen to have an onsite survey, we will set a date for our visit. 

Once we have completed our review, we will provide a written report outlining our findings with examples and recommendations for improvement, where appropriate.

After you have had a chance to review our report, we will hold a meeting to review our report and answer any questions that you may have.

What does it cost?

The price of this checkup is $1500 if it is completed remotely. Onsite reviews will include travel time and expenses and will be quoted individually.

  • Electrical design: 

    • Review for best practices; compliance with UL508a, NFPA79, CE standards.

    • Identify potential component problems—single source, obsolescence, or approaching obsolescence.

    • Suggest how to minimize control loci for easier service and better reliability. 

    • Review overall architecture for efficiency, serviceability, reliability and future-proofing.

  • User Interface:

    • Review for best practices and compliance with NFPA79.

    • Offer our opinion on usability, effectiveness and safety.

  • Construction:

    • Evaluate for UL508a/NFPA79 compliance.

    • Review best practices for controls assembly.

    • Check for common and uncommon “gotchas”.

  • Documentation:

    • Review schematics for accuracy, required information, best practices.

    • Review layout and interconnection documentation, if applicable.

    • Review installation and maintenance instructions, if available.
